How to use Plant List
🔍 Browsing the plant list
Use the Plant type and Parent species dropdowns to narrow the list. The Search box matches against both common and scientific names. Toggle Cultivars and Straight natives checkboxes to show or hide each category. Hit Reset to clear all filters.
🌿 Building a palette
Click + Add on any row to add a plant to your working palette. Added plants appear in the Palette drawer (top right), grouped by plant type. Remove a plant by hitting × next to it in the drawer. Your palette is saved locally in your browser and persists between sessions.
💾 Saving & loading palettes
Inside the palette drawer, click Save current palette… to save a named snapshot to the shared database — useful for sharing a palette with colleagues or preserving a project phase. Saved palettes can be loaded or deleted from the same drawer. Loading a saved palette replaces your current working palette.
📊 Palette dashboard
The dashboard on the right updates live as you add plants. The Biodiversity tab shows selected plant count, unique parent species, genera, and a type-mix breakdown. Planting character summarizes light, moisture, and soil requirements across your palette. Bloom chart visualizes bloom timing and color across the season for all selected plants.
🔬 Viewing & editing plant traits
Click the 🔍 icon on any row to open the traits panel for that plant — showing light, moisture, soil, bloom time, bloom color, height, and spread. Click ✏️ Edit inside the panel to modify traits. Use 🌐 Auto-fill from NC State to automatically pull trait data from the NC State Extension plant database. Trait edits require an edit key (your firm's shared key, stored in your browser).
🌼 Status & plant type
Each plant is flagged as Straight native or Native cultivar. This can be corrected in the trait edit panel if a plant is miscategorized. The top-right legend and filter checkboxes let you quickly show or hide each category.
📤 Exporting
Use the Export button in the palette dashboard to download your current palette as a CSV, ready for import into other tools or for sharing with clients.
